BLOSSOM & ROOT

 BLOSSOM & ROOT

Oh, my goodness, today's lunch at Blossom & Root in Danville was such a treat! For starters, there was the luxury of knowing I could order anything I wanted from the menu because the restaurant is 100 percent vegan.

Then, even though I'm not much of a day drinker, I decided to try this fabulous lavender champagne cocktail, because how could I resist?

That set the tone for the rest of the meal. Since I couldn't possibly order everything I wanted to try, I just picked an appetizer, a soup, and a dessert.

The soup was a wonderful butternut squash pear bisque, served with grilled sourdough. The soup was seasoned with curry, which really brought the butternut squash and pear flavors alive. I love almost any version of butternut squash soup, but this one was really special.

Next came the fritters, described on the menu as seasonal vegetables with a chipotle glaze and sesame seeds, served with a creamy herb dressing. The seasonal vegetables were carrots, sweet potatoes, and cauliflower, three of my favorites. The fritters were excellent, but way too much food for one person. The menu has it listed as a "Shareable," and it would definitely be enough for two or three people.

While I might possibly have been able to finish the fritters, I stopped midway and boxed up the rest of them to take home so I'd have room for dessert. I had seen the Chocolate Oreo S'more Mousse listed on the menu, and I wasn't going to leave the restaurant without trying it. Consisting of dark chocolate, coconut cream, crushed up Oreos, and marshmallows, this creamy dessert was the perfect way to end my meal.

I didn't order an entree this time, but the women at the table next to me had the Funghi Sando, a maitake mushroom sandwich, and said it was very good. I wish I'd gotten a picture of it, but felt like it would be rude to ask them to hold off on eating until I'd had a chance to photograph their lunch.

Blossom & Root is located at 411 Hartz Avenue in Danville, and they're open Wednesday through Sunday. If you're vegan, or even if you're not, you owe it to yourself to check out this gem of a restaurant.
